Renewal window: 1 October – 31 December 2026. Miss the FDA food facility biennial renewal and the registration expires — with no grace period for US-bound food.
If your UK facility manufactures, processes, packs or holds food destined for the United States, 2026 is a renewal year that can stop shipments if you miss it. FDA food facility registration does not roll forward automatically. The biennial window opens on 1 October 2026 at 12:01 a.m. and closes on 31 December 2026 at 11:59 p.m. After that, an unrenewed registration is treated as expired.
Most exporters assume registration is a one-time filing, or that an update mid-year somehow covers renewal. That assumption is wrong — and costly at the border.
This article explains the official window, renew versus update, DUNS/UFI requirements, what happens if you miss the deadline, and a practical FURLS checklist for UK manufacturers. It is practical guidance, not legal advice. Registration is not FDA approval or certification.

What the 2026 biennial window actually requires
Under the FD&C Act and 21 CFR Part 1 Subpart H, domestic and foreign food facilities that manufacture/process, pack or hold food for US consumption must renew registration in even-numbered years. FDA’s biennial renewal user guide states the 2026 period runs from 1 October through 31 December (21 CFR 1.230(b)).
- Even-year rule only. 2024, 2026, 2028… Odd years are not renewal windows for food facility registration.
- No grace period. After 11:59 p.m. on 31 December, an unrenewed registration expires and is removed from the FURLS/FFR account (21 CFR 1.241(b)).
- FDA fee is $0. Any US Agent or third-party fees are commercial — FDA is not affiliated with private registrars.
Renew versus update — do not mix them up
During the renewal window, Update is not available until the registration is renewed first. Renew even if nothing changed (abbreviated renewal may apply), then update addresses, categories, contacts or US Agent details if needed. Trying to “just update” without renewing is a common reason facilities think they are done when they are not.

DUNS, UFI and the myth that trips up UK exporters
FDA requires a Unique Facility Identifier. DUNS is currently the accepted UFI. The name and address on the DUNS record should match the facility registration.
What DUNS is not: an even/odd-year switch. Renewal cadence is the even-year rule. UFI/DUNS applies whenever you submit — not “only in odd years.” Do not treat historical one-cycle PENDING UFI policies as standard 2026 advice.
Foreign facilities and the US Agent
Foreign facilities generally must designate a US Agent for FDA communications. That role is not the same as an FSVP importer or a Customs Importer of Record. Confirm agent details before you renew, and make sure the agent can receive FDA notices through the season.
- Confirm US Agent name, address and email before 1 October
- Renew first, then update agent fields if FDA’s flow requires it
- Keep registration confirmations for your broker and commercial team
What happens if you don’t renew
Expired registration is treated as a failure to register. Food from an unregistered foreign facility offered for import may be held until a valid registration is in place (21 CFR 1.285). Recovery means getting properly registered again — not a quiet extension.
- Account removal. Expired registrations are cancelled and removed from FURLS/FFR.
- Import holds. US-bound food can sit at the border while you scramble for a valid number.
- Operational chaos. Lost PINs, mismatched DUNS, and December call volumes compound the delay.
- Commercial cost. Missed Amazon or retail windows hurt far more than renewing on time.
Practical FURLS checklist for UK manufacturers
- Confirm the facility still requires registration (exemptions under 21 CFR 1.226 are narrow).
- Locate FURLS / access.fda.gov credentials and the existing registration number before 1 October.
- Verify DUNS/UFI name and address match the facility.
- Confirm US Agent details for foreign facilities.
- When the window opens, complete biennial renewal in the Food Facility Registration Module.
- Only after renewal, submit any needed updates.
- Save confirmations; share them with brokers and account managers.
- Diary the 2028 even-year window immediately.
The Global Import Agent approach
Global Import Agent supports UK exporters with FDA facility registration, US Agent continuity and related import compliance — the same infrastructure many clients already use for FSVP, labelling and Prior Notice. Renewal season is not a new problem for us; it is a scheduled compliance cycle we run with clients every even year.
- Registration and biennial renewal support through FURLS/FFRM
- US Agent continuity so FDA notices do not go unanswered
- Alignment with your broker and commercial timeline before the 31 December cut-off
- Clear documentation for your audit trail — without framing registration as “FDA approval”
Renew before the window closes
The 2026 biennial window is open from 1 October to 31 December. If your facility ships food to the US and you are unsure whether renewal is done, we can map your exposure on a short call.
