Frequently asked questions

IoR & Other Services

Requirements vary by product and destination. These answers outline the starting point for the questions we receive most often.

Ask our team

What is an Importer of Record (IOR), and why do I need one?

An Importer of Record (IOR) is legally responsible for ensuring imported goods comply with U.S. regulations. If you’re a foreign company importing regulated products like medical devices, alcohol, or food, you need an IOR to handle compliance, documentation, and tax payments.

What USDA permits are required for agricultural product imports?

Depending on the product, you may need:

  • APHIS permits for plant-based goods
  • FSIS permits for meat, poultry, and dairy
  • Import inspection approvals for perishable goods

Do I need CE or UKCA marking for medical devices in the UK & EU?

Yes. Medical devices must comply with EU Medical Device Regulation (MDR) and carry a CE mark. For the UK, products must comply with UKCA regulations and be registered with the MHRA (Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency).

What is COLA approval for alcohol imports?

COLA ( Certificate of Label Approval) is required by the TTB for alcohol imports. Before you can sell imported alcohol in the U.S., your labels must be reviewed and approved by the TTB.

Can you help with tobacco product registration?

Yes. All tobacco products imported into the U.S. must be registered with the FDA Center for Tobacco Products (CTP). We assist with product listing, ingredient submission, and compliance with FDA tobacco regulations.

What are the key compliance requirements for importing food and beverages?

Importers must comply with FDA, USDA, and CBP regulations in the U.S., FSA and Trading Standards in the UK, and EU Food Safety Laws. This includes proper labeling, food safety documentation, and customs clearance procedures
