What a US food label has to show
FDA food labelling rules sit mainly in 21 CFR Part 101. Most packaged foods need the same core elements, split across two areas of the pack.
- Principal display panel: the statement of identity (the common name of the food) and the net quantity of contents.
- Information panel: the ingredient list, Nutrition Facts, the major food allergen declaration and the name and place of business of the manufacturer, packer or distributor.
- Claims: nutrient content and health claims must meet FDA's definitions before they appear on pack.
