This is the working checklist for the 2026 FDA food facility registration renewal. It is the list you tick off at your desk, not the background reading. If you want the why behind each step, renew versus update, D-U-N-S and the consequences of missing the window, start with our FDA food facility biennial renewal 2026 guide.
The checklist has four blocks: before you log in, in the renewal module, after you submit, and if it goes wrong. Every line carries the rule it comes from in 21 CFR Part 1, so you or your US Agent can check it. It is practical guidance, not legal advice, and FDA registration is not FDA approval.

Before You Log In: What Should You Have Ready?
- ✓ Each site is covered. Every facility that manufactures, processes, packs or holds food for US consumption is registered, unless an exemption applies (§§ 1.225–1.226).
- ✓ Your FDA Industry Systems login works. Have the account details, registration number and PIN to hand. If you have lost access, contact FDA's help desk instead of creating a second registration.
- ✓ Your D-U-N-S number is valid and the facility name and address held by Dun & Bradstreet match your registration exactly. FDA checks the address linked to your unique facility identifier (§§ 1.231(a)(3), 1.232(a)(2)).
- ✓ Owner, operator or agent in charge details are current: name, address, phone and email (§ 1.232(a)(6)).
- ✓ Parent company, trade names and mailing address are current (§ 1.232(a)(3)–(5)).
- ✓ Food product categories and activity types still reflect what the site does (§ 1.232(a)(7)–(8)).
- ✓ Your US Agent is ready to confirm. Foreign facilities must name a US Agent who lives or has a place of business in the United States and is physically present there. A mailbox or answering service does not qualify (§§ 1.227, 1.232(c)(1)).
- ✓ Emergency contact phone and email are current (§ 1.232(b)(2) and (c)(2)).
- ✓ Third-party filing is authorised in writing, with the authoriser's name, address, phone and email ready (§ 1.230(b)).
- ✓ You know which route you need: a full renewal if anything has changed, or an abbreviated renewal if nothing has changed since your last submission (§ 1.230(b)–(c)).
In the Renewal Module: What Do You Need to Get Right?
- ✓ Choose the 2026 biennial renewal, not Update. FDA's user guide explains that Update is not available until the registration has been renewed.
- ✓ Review every section of each registration and edit anything out of date.
- ✓ Complete the certifications: the assurance that FDA will be permitted to inspect, and the statement that the information is true and accurate (§ 1.232(a)(9)–(10)).
- ✓ Use English and the Latin alphabet. Names may stay in their original language (§ 1.231(d)).
- ✓ Pay nothing to FDA. FDA charges no fee to register or renew (§ 1.231(c)). Any fee you pay is for a service provider's work.
After You Submit: How Do You Know You're Done?
- ✓ You have FDA's renewal confirmation. If you changed your unique facility identifier or US Agent, or a third party filed for you, FDA confirms only after it has verified the identifier and the US Agent or authoriser has confirmed (§ 1.231(a)(3)–(5)). A renewal waiting on those checks is not finished.
- ✓ The confirmation is saved with the registration number, date and who submitted it.
- ✓ Your importers, brokers and prior notice filers know the registration is active. Prior notice identifies the manufacturer by its registration number (§ 1.281(a)(6)), and US importers will be asking for proof.
- ✓ The ongoing duties are in the diary: update within 60 calendar days of any change (§ 1.234(a)); on a change of owner, the former owner cancels and the new owner registers, both within 60 days (§ 1.234(b)); and cancel within 60 days if the facility stops supplying the US (§ 1.235(a)).
What If Something Goes Wrong?
- ✓ Missed 31 December? FDA treats the registration as expired and the facility as having failed to register, and it will cancel an expired registration (§ 1.241(b)–(c)).
- ✓ Shipment held at the port? Food from a foreign facility that should be registered but is not can be held under section 801(l). A valid registration number must reach FDA within 30 calendar days of the hold notice (§ 1.285(i)(1), in force since 27 October 2025). See our guide to the first steps after an FDA detention notice.
- ✓ Stuck in the system? FDA's FURLS help desk can be reached at FURLS@fda.gov, 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. US Eastern Time on US government business days. FDA warns of long waits during the renewal period.
Which Dates Should Go in Your Diary?
- ✓ 1 October 2026: renewal window opened
- ✓ 30 November 2026: our suggested internal target, not an FDA date, to leave time for D-U-N-S and US Agent checks before the Christmas break
- ✓ 31 December 2026: renewal window closes
- ✓ 1 January 2027: unrenewed registrations are treated as expired
If your D-U-N-S record and your registration do not match, fix that first. Our article on FEI vs D-U-N-S vs FDA registration numbers explains which identifier goes where.
FAQ: 2026 Renewal Checklist
Do we have to renew if nothing has changed?
Yes. Every registration must be renewed in the window. If nothing has changed since your last submission, you can use the abbreviated renewal, which confirms that and certifies the information is accurate (§ 1.230(c)).
Can our US Agent or another company renew for us?
Yes, if you authorise them. The renewal must identify the person who authorised it, and FDA confirms the renewal only once that person has confirmed (§§ 1.230(b), 1.231(a)(4)).
Does a renewed registration mean FDA has approved our products?
No. Registration tells FDA who you are and what you do. It is not an approval of your facility or your products.
